Coventry Cross Monument

Coventry

– Overview –

After its dismantling in 2019, the cross found its temporary home in storage, where it patiently awaited its turn for restoration. The gears of the rebuilding process were set into motion in the year 2022, as artisans, craftsmen, and experts began their meticulous work to revive this historical masterpiece. The rebuilt cross proudly reclaimed its place in Coventry’s landscape in July 2023.

The cross draws its inspiration from the 1976 replica of a monument dating back to the 16th century, weaving a connection between Coventry’s history and King Henry VI’s reign. During the medieval era, Coventry held significance as a bustling market town.

A meticulous design process was set in motion to fashion lifting frames and cradles, executed by Holland Contracting and Conservation. Our proficient design team formulated a comprehensive dismantling plan, which received approval from Coventry City Council.

With well over 100 component parts making up the monument, each piece underwent rigorous scrutiny prior to and throughout the dismantling procedure. Thorough records were maintained for each part, with any identified defects diligently logged.

This reconstructed cross boasts several novel elements. Its design incorporates stained glass windows that narrate the tale of Coventry’s medieval cross and its association with King Henry VI.

Standing tall at 60 feet, the cross is adorned with 33 statues portraying a blend of animals, angels, saints, and kings. At its pinnacle rests the original crown from the 1976 rendition.

Among the additions, a newly introduced 3D-printed sculpture of King Henry VI graces the monument, meticulously crafted by local artisans at HPL. This sculpture faithfully mirrors the likeness of the original depiction of King Henry VI, now exhibited at the Herbert Museum.
